Today, Geena Davis and her Institute on Gender in Media announced research findings from a new study, which surveyed members of USA Archery to examine the role entertainment media plays in archery, now the fastest growing sport in the United States. The study’s key finding is that fictional archers in films and television programs have inspired young people to take up archery, especially girls.
Hitting the Bullseye: Reel Girl Archers Inspire Real Girl Archers
Girls’ participation in national archery competitions doubled in 2012. In light of this, we sought to investigate whether Hollywood representations of female archers, such as in The Hunger Games and Brave, was correlated with girls’ interest and inspiration towards archery. We conducted a national survey to members of USA Archery and asked them about their involvement in archery, what inspired them to take on the sport, and who their role models are.
