Global Symposium 2015
Our 2015 Global Symposiums on Gender in Media was held in London with upcoming dates in Mumbai and Brazil in 2016. Our 2014 global symposiums were held in New York, Washington D.C. and Los Angeles.
The Global Symposium in London was October 8, 2015 and was hosted by the BFI London Film Festival. It was the Institute’s first Global Symposium on Gender in Media outside the U.S. Geena Davis was the opening keynote at the Global Symposium and introduced new global research on the influence of international films on diverse film audiences will be presented.
The first panel was introduced by BFI CEO Amanda Nevill CBE and explored the impact of film on global issues concerning women and girls, focusing on organizational strategies and interventions. In this context, the BFI outlined how it is addressing gender equality in film including its groundbreaking "three-ticks" initiative aimed at ensuring BFI-backed films represent the diversity of the UK.
The second panel was introduced by producer Elizabeth Karlsen, Chair of WFTV, which celebrates its 25th Anniversary in 2015. The focus was on storytelling from around the world and empowering women and girls through film.
Symposium Impact Survey Results
Our biannual symposiums on gender in media have reached more than 3,000 leading CEOs and decision makers in the entertainment industry, corporations and non-profitorganizations interested in the empowerment of women and girls. Post-attendance surveys have shown:
- 91.5% of respondents indicated that the information they learned would influence how they perceive gender balance and stereotypes in their work.
- 97% of respondents would share and utilize our research findings with their peers and in their companies.
- 100% of respondents felt satisfied or very satisfied with the Symposium.
