Content Creators’ STEM Checklist

“If women and girls don’t see themselves on screen as STEM professionals, they’re less likely to pursue those career paths.”

-Geena Davis

Creators’ Checklist

  • Do I include an equal number of men and women STEM characters?
  • Do I prominently feature women of color in STEM careers?
  • For women STEM characters, do I actually show them working in their profession?
  • Do my STEM characters work outside of traditional “labs” (e.g. oceanographers in the field, geologists gathering samples)?
  • Do my women STEM characters work in engineering, computer science, and physical science (and not just life science)?
  • Do I portray my women STEM characters as overcoming adversity?
  • Do I avoid the stereotypical plotline that women have to sacrifice their personal lives in order to advance their STEM careers?
