Only 1 in 10 film directors in India is woman: study

Women are greatly under-represented in the Indian film industry while their number as audience in theatres was far lesser than men, a study on Gender in Media says. The report by Geena Davis Institute, founded by Academy Award winning actress Geena Davis, was released at ‘Global Symposium On Gender in Media’ here. According to the study, funded by the Oak Foundation, the gender ratio in India’s film industry stands at 6.2 males to every female, and only one-in-ten directors is a woman. Read More…

25 years on, Geena Davis reveals she wanted Susan Sarandon’s Thelma & Louise role

It’s been 25 years since Ridley Scott released Thelma & Louse, the thriller following two friends on the run from the law. In the film, Geena Davis plays Thelma while it’s Susan Sarandon who stars as Louise, the character who shoots and kills a would-be rapist. “I’d been following this [project] for a year…[and] had decided that I should play Louise. And I wanted this so bad, and I’m just pitching my heart out, and I brought all my notes and everything about why I absolutely have to be Louise.” Read More…

At FLO film fest, 32 shades of women’s issues from across the globe

Spread over three days across several venues in the city, the FLO Film Festival, organised by FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO), will showcase 32 films which will explore the theme of ‘woman’. It’s a battle of the sexes on the NBC game show, with Geena Davis (Commander in Chief), Kate Walsh (Private Practice) and Angela Kinsey (The Office) facing off against Ben Feldman (Superstore), Michael Ealy (Almost Human) and Adam Goldberg (Fargo). But the evening really gets explosive during “Jane in the Box,” where host Jane Lynch asks a simple question with a numeric answer. The first team to ring in with the correct response earns two points, and the losing team must crank the “Jane in the Box” as many times as they answer. But the stars must be on high alert as the box could explode—with confetti—at any given time.

Sundance screens Wall Street thriller ‘Equity’ while honoring female leaders of Utah

All the recent buzz about gender inequality on Hollywood screens just underscores how “intractable” the problem has been over the past seven decades, says Oscar-winning actor Geena Davis. That is, female characters represent just under 30 percent of the characters on screen, the same percentage for the past 70 years, according to research conducted by the actor’s nonprofit Institute on Gender in Media. The female representation on screen has “utterly stalled” since 1946, Davis said Thursday at the third annual Utah Women’s Leadership Celebration at the Sundance Film Festival. Read More…
