January 19, 2016 Actor and Activist Geena Davis Joins FOX Sports for Conversation on Gender Equality in Media

On Thursday, January 7, Academy Award winner Geena Davis visited the FOX Sports headquarters in Los Angeles for a candid conversation on the subject of female representation in media and entertainment. The event, organized by the Women of FOX Sports group, convened female colleagues from across FOX Sports businesses to discuss gender equality in the sports field and beyond.

An Evening with Geena Davis is our annual fundraiser and was held on December 3, 2015 at the William Turner Gallery in Santa Monica, California. This event is attended by 200 thought leaders in the entertainment industry. Since its beginning, three years ago, this event has raised almost $130,000 to support the research, education and advocacy programs that are creating a world where girls grow up surrounded by positive reminders of their equality and worth. This year we honored Nina Tassler, Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment.

How is the entertainment creative community creating content to tell compelling stories by leveraging new and emerging media avenues? Consumers are using new technologies and platforms to find unique and rich content. According to the Institute’s research, when there is the presence of a female writer, there will be a 10% increase in on-screen roles.

June 16, 2014 See Jane Salon – Women Pioneers in a Galaxy Far, Far Away

How can media encourage girls and women to pursue careers in science? One way is to feature exciting and dynamic portrayals of female scientists in movies and TV shows. Sounds easy enough, but the Institute’s 2012 research on the career occupations of female characters in family films, prime time and children’s television showed that there was a 15:1 ratio of male to female characters in science. Why is this so important? Because by 2018, there will be 1.2 million US job openings in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields, with a significant shortage of qualified applicants to fill them.
