Hollywood Game Night Gets Explosive With a “Jane in the Box” Twist

It’s a battle of the sexes on the NBC game show, with Geena Davis (Commander in Chief), Kate Walsh (Private Practice) and Angela Kinsey (The Office) facing off against Ben Feldman (Superstore), Michael Ealy (Almost Human) and Adam Goldberg (Fargo). But the evening really gets explosive during “Jane in the Box,” where host Jane Lynch asks a simple question with a numeric answer. The first team to ring in with the correct response earns two points, and the losing team must crank the “Jane in the Box” as many times as they answer. But the stars must be on high alert as the box could explode—with confetti—at any given time.

Sundance screens Wall Street thriller ‘Equity’ while honoring female leaders of Utah

All the recent buzz about gender inequality on Hollywood screens just underscores how “intractable” the problem has been over the past seven decades, says Oscar-winning actor Geena Davis. That is, female characters represent just under 30 percent of the characters on screen, the same percentage for the past 70 years, according to research conducted by the actor’s nonprofit Institute on Gender in Media. The female representation on screen has “utterly stalled” since 1946, Davis said Thursday at the third annual Utah Women’s Leadership Celebration at the Sundance Film Festival. Read More…

#OscarsSoWhite, Sony Hack Raise Hopes for More Diverse Hollywood

The all-white slate of actors nominated for Oscars this year is forcing some uncomfortable discussion in Hollywood about racism and diversity. That’s just what this town needs, said a panel of prominent women in the entertainment business. Just as leaked documents from the 2014 hack of Sony Corp. led to an uproar over equal pay for actresses, the controversy over the nominees is shedding light on sexism and racism in movies and TV. Such flare-ups are leading to conversations with studios that are producing results after years of little change in the makeup of casts and crews, said Geena Davis, who won a best supporting actress award for “The Accidental Tourist” in 1989. She now helps run an organization that tracks the rates of women represented on screen. Read More…

Is Hollywood finally a woman’s world too?

“I remember when ‘Thelma and Louise’ came out, all of the press was predicting that this would start a whole wave of female-centric films,” Davis says. “The next film I did was ‘A League of Their Own,’ which was also a big hit, and the same prediction was made, especially for female sport movies. But neither prediction proved true. [It’s] the same for the many female-driven films over the last 20-plus years since then. No matter how successful female-centric films have been, Hollywood just keeps feeling they’re one-offs, that men won’t like films starring women, and so they should not be made often.” Read More…

Women in Entertainment: Geena Davis on the “Tremendous Obstacles to Women’s Progress”

Much of the conversation at THR’s Women in Entertainment breakfast, held Dec. 9 in Los Angeles, centered on the need for female actors to support each other and fight to gain more opportunities in the industry. The topic was near and dear to the heart of Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis, who — after more than 30 years in the industry — has a deep understanding of the long road women in Hollywood still have to travel before they equal their male counterparts. How the women of Hollywood called out gender inequality in 2015
